The HokoLoko Story
HokoLoko is here to make purchasing from a local producer more efficient and their high quality food more widely available. If we do this, we can make high quality local food production a flourishing, viable and sustainable industry.
Our producers are our heroes. Their entrepreneurship, drive for quality and immense year-round efforts rouse us to become the platform where they can share and shine amongst their local communities.
With the popularisation and reliance on supermarkets and highly variable approaches to local produce distribution we have lost touch with local, seasonal produce – it is a celebrated novelty – but we think it should be the norm.
A SOCIAL STARTUP
Inspired by the often hidden potential of local food producers in Taranaki and a wave of modern and collaborative food distribution models in Europe, Rosie and Jeff created New Zealand’s first sociable online farmers market platform.
With some fantastic relationships and a healthy dose of DIY, the first collection was hosted in October 2017 with 23 customers and a tidy offering of fish, free-range eggs, veges, microgreens and bread. From there the platform has swelled to a healthy grocery offering with weekly regulars, a little national tv spot alongside one of our growers and an attractive inner city collection location.
